Our story begins as kids boating and fishing in Narragansett Bay with frequent trips to Block Island and Point Judith. Like you, perhaps, we were always in search of the “big one”. We didn’t realize it at the time but we were so fortunate to be able to be on the water, fishing and doing what we loved at such a young age. We knew the bay like the back of our hands and would be piloting the boat from the bridge (don’t tell anyone) while searching for bluefish and stripers. We had barely entered junior high school when we fished several tournaments and you could say, we were “hooked” for life.
As time passed, our family moved further north in New England to Massachusetts. Eventually, we followed our Mother and Doc to Doc’s home state of Maine. Fast forward to now and Tom and Donna are residents of Arundel and Kennebunkport, respectively, and opening a family business. For almost two decades, we’ve spent from May to October fishing primarily along the southern Maine coast. Trolling along the Saco River, Saco Bay, and Biddeford Pool have become our most cherished (and successful) spots.
Along the way, Doc and Tom had become good friends with Barry “Bear” Welch, owner of Bear’s Tackle Shop in Kennebunk. Over time Bear would divulge his “secrets” to the making of the “tube” to Doc as Doc was the perfect student. Doc perfected the technique and would eventually pass on the knowledge to Tom and Donna.
Sad to report that Barry “Bear” Welch passed away November 21, 2021. Our hope is that his legacy can live on with the “tube” that he made famous among sport fishermen in Southern Maine. The Striper tube lures will be handmade and available to those that have grown accustomed to fishing with this particular lure.
